5GCroCo is a European innovation initiative that aims to conduct cross-border 5G connectivity tests to ensure uninterrupted service provision for autonomous cars. With the help of operators, this has now been demonstrated to be effective.
In the future, 5G should enable autonomous cars to communicate with each other so that they can not only drive without any human assistance, but also avoid any risk of collision. But what will happen once a border is crossed and access to the domestic network is cut off?
This technical challenge is at the heart of the 5GCroCo, or “Fifth Generation Cross-Border Control” programme, which is responsible for implementing all the solutions needed to guarantee the interoperability of networks when crossing from one country to another.
With the help of several operators, 5GCroCo has conducted a series of tests in the cross-border corridor between France (Metz), Germany (Merzig) and Luxembourg. The objective is now to validate various cross-border scenarios with the help of mobile network operators and automotive suppliers. In the long run, the idea is to achieve a seamless provision of connectivity and uninterrupted service delivery, also with a view to developing a business model for operators.
5GCroCo currently brings together a consortium of stakeholders from the automotive and mobile communications industries, with the support of the road traffic authorities. In total, the initiative unites 24 partners from seven countries.
