PETALING JAYA: Malaysian women’s team failed to make the quarter-finals after going down 0-5 to heavyweights China in the Group D tie on Sunday.

It was their second defeat in the group as they had lost 1-4 to Denmark on Saturday. It was the fourth time that Malaysia had failed to clear the group stage.

World No. 123 Eoon Qi Xuan, who sensationally upset world No. 23 Line Christophersen for the team’s sole point against Denmark, was rewarded with the leading first singles role in place of S. Kisona to face Olympics champion Chen Yufei.

However, Qi Xuan found Yufei just way too good as she was completely outplayed 13-21, 11-21 in just 31 minutes.

Scratch combination Lee Meng Yean-M. Thinaah tried to put up a good fight for 52 minutes before going down 12-21, 17-21 to former world junior champions Liu Xuanxuan Xia Yuting in the second match.

Then all eyes were on the much anticipated match involving 17-year-old Siti Nurshuhaini Azman, who was the only member of the national junior squad to feature in the Finals but her debut only lasted for 23 minutes.

Going up against a world-class player like He Bingjiao was clearly a mismatch as Nurshuhaini slumped to a 21-8, 21-3 defeat.

Debutants Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing were also out of depth in a battle of two scratch combinations in the second doubles.

Olympics silver medallist Jia Yifan was paired with mixed doubles specialist Huang Dongping but they were still a class above as they strolled past the Malaysians 21-9, 21-12.

In the last match, 18-year-old Letshanaa went down 15-21, 11-21 to world No. 18 Wang Zhiyi as China sealed the contest 5-0.
