TANGKAK: Police are on the hunt for an ethnic Rohingya man after he escaped from the Magistrate’s Court lock-up here.
Tangkak OCPD Supt Mohd Fadhil Minhat said the 32-year-old suspect escaped through the main entrance of the courthouse at around 11.55am on Wednesday (Dec 15) before his hearing.
“The suspect was picked up from the Sungai Udang Prison in Melaka yesterday, and brought here to attend the court session for a case under Section 388 of the Penal Code (for extortion).
“The proceeding was supposed to begin at 10am but the court stood down while waiting for the suspect’s lawyer.
“The police personnel who were ushering the handcuffed suspect to court only realised that he was trying to escape after noticing him running out of the door towards the gate,” he said in a press conference on Wednesday (Dec 15).
Supt Mohd Fadhil added that four police personnel and the court security guards chased the suspect but he managed to run towards the woods.
The distance between the suspect and the police was quite far, making it difficult for them to nab him, he said.
“I urge the public to keep a look out for the suspect and those with information should immediately contact the police.
“The policemen who were tasked for ushering the suspect to court will also be held responsible and investigated under Section 233 of the Code for negligence,” he said. He said the suspect, a bald man with a height of 160cm and weighing around 65kg, was last seen in a white T-shirt and brown pants.
The case is classified under Section 224 of the Code for escaping custody.
The suspect also has an ongoing hearing at the Muar Session’s Court for rape under Section 376 of the Code.
