GEORGE TOWN: A man is feared to have drowned after falling off the Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge.

State Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Capt Abd Razak Mohamed said the incident occurred at KM8.5 of the Batu Maung-bound lane of the bridge at 4.40am on Monday (Nov 22).

“The agency activated a search and rescue (SAR) operation once we received information,” he said in a statement.

Abd Razak said that an MMEA boat was sent to the location to search for the man, adding that the operation is being assisted by the Fire and Rescue Department, the Batu Uban marine police and Civil Defence Force with a search area involving 22.42 sq nautical miles.

He said the 39-year-old man from Kuala Lumpur is believed to have abandoned his car and his personal belongings before the incident.

Abd Razak said a search and rescue base near the bridge has been set up and efforts to search for the man are ongoing.
