The year-end holiday is always the most fun of all the holiday seasons. Everyone wants to close the year with a bang, and start the new one feeling happy, refreshed and inspired.

This is why most of us try to meet or catch up with as many friends as we can in December, and spend more time with loved ones too.

On top of that, the colourful Christmas and winter-themed decorations make many places, usually shopping malls and hotels, seem magical. Perhaps it’s all that fake snow or the excessive use of glittery baubles.

We also give gifts to the special people in our lives, and, if we’re feeling generous, to the not-so-special but still important people in our lives too (like the delivery folks who have been sending countless parcels to us in the past two years).

For those who are still trying to figure out what to get your loved ones, or if you’re looking to reward yourself with, we recommend booking a staycation in the city. And not just any city either – Kuala Lumpur.

Just walk around the main areas of KL today and you will see many shops, buildings and landmarks decked in lovely holiday decorations. Among them are the KLCC, The Gardens Mall, the River Of Life and of course, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, one of the most visited shopping centres during the holidays thanks to its imaginative seasonal decorations.

A staycation in KL will surely put you in good spirits and ready to ring in the new year.

EQ, one of the oldest hotel brands in Malaysia, is currently offering guests a unique shopping staycation experience, called Paradise In Pavilion. This is the second year EQ is running the promotion, and this time around there are more perks and added bonuses (worth more than RM1,100) included for guests.

The PIP promotion is in collaboration with Pavilion KL, with Mercedes-Benz as the official car. This means that guests who book under this promotion get to be chauffeured between the hotel and Pavilion KL. This service is only available at certain hours so do ask the concierge for details. (The driver, Eddie, is a lovely, patient man.)

Mercedes-Benz owners get even more exclusive benefits so do ask about this when making your reservations.

Guests are entitled to some vouchers and extra services at selected stores in the mall. Get treated to two complimentary glasses of sparkling wine or champagne at the first participating store you visit at the mall. The participating stores are Boss, Chloé, Club 21, Diptyque, Giuseppe Zanotti, Hublot, IWC, Karl Lagerfeld, Mulberry, Panerai and Swiss Watch Gallery.

Meanwhile, guests also get dining vouchers at Kampachi, as well as a 10% discount at Al-Amar (terms and conditions apply); these are only applicable at the Pavilion KL outlets.

Back at the hotel, enjoy two welcome cocktails or mocktails at Sky51, one of the most popular rooftop bars in the city. Even if you don’t feel like drinking, do head up to the hotel’s 51st floor for a panoramic view of KL. Here, you get to see both the iconic Menara Kuala Lumpur and KLCC, as well as other skyscrapers in the surrounding areas.

If height is a problem for you, then go back down to the 29th floor to hang out by the pool, work out at the gym or join a yoga session. The Sanctum spa is also located on this floor.

Apart from the PIP, the hotel’s four main restaurants – Sabayon, Kampachi, Nipah and Etoile Bistro – will also be having their holiday dining promotions. Sabayon, the award-winning fine dining establishment, is considered a “new” addition to the hotel as the other outlets existed much earlier, when EQ was still known as Hotel Equatorial.

Here’s a bit of history: The original hotel was opened in 1973, and for years remained one of the top-rated, home-grown premiere accommodations in Malaysia. In 2012, the hotel was shut down and demolished to make way for a major redevelopment.

In 2019, the Equatorial Plaza opened in the same spot, with the rebranded hotel – EQ – as the building’s centrepiece.

The PIP promotion ends on Dec 30; call the hotel or email them for more information ( or to make reservations.
